Shaw was consultant orthopaedic surgeon at MRI. He was born in Devon on 4 April 1927 and gained his medical education at Sheffield University. Shaw held junior appointments at Sheffield Royal Infirmary before serving as regimental medical officer for his national service. In 1957, Shaw was appointed registrar in surgery at the United Sheffield Hospital, and two years later became registrar at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, London. Shaw was research assistant to the Institute of Orthopaedics and delivered the Arris and Gale lecture of the Royal College of Surgeons. In 1965 Shaw followed Sir Harry Platt as consultant orthopaedic surgeon to United Manchester Hospitals and Birmingham Regional Hospital Board (including the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry). He was later also honorary surgeon to the Bethesda Hospital for Handicapped Children. He specialised in spinal surgery and was also remembered for his work with handicapped children. Shaw was on the council of the Medical Protection Society and was chairman of the medical board of MRI. He was a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, the Royal Society of Medicine, the Anatomical society of Great Britain and the Surgical Research Society. Shaw died on 14 May 1977.
