Williamson was born in Burnley and studied medicine at Owens College Manchester. After graduating he spent time studying in Vienna, he then spent time in hospitals in Birmingham and London where he developed an interest in neurology. He later returned to Manchester, becoming a honorary physician at Ancoats Hospital in 1899 and a honorary assistant physician at MRI in 1902 (he was a full physician at MRI from 1911-1917). He lectured in nervous diseases at the University of Manchester and was editor of the Medical Chronicle. In 1908 he published Diseases of the spinal cord which became a standard work. During the First World War he was in charge of the neurological unit at the 2nd Western General Hospital, Manchester. In 1917 he was forced to give up medical practice on health grounds
