Sellers gained his medical education at MRI, Pine Street School and Owens College before settling in general practice in Rochdale. Sellers was honorary consulting surgeon to Rochdale Infirmary and Dispensary. He was heavily involved in the St John Ambulance, being chief surgeon and superintendent to the Rochdale Corps and honorary associate, examiner and lecturer to the Association. He was also honorary associate of the Grand Priory Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England.
