Stanbridge studied medicine at Guy's Hospital. He was senior bacteriologist to the Public Health Laboratory Service, lecturer in bacteriology at the University of Manchester and senior lecturer in medical microbiology at the Welsh National School of Medicine. Stanbridge was later appointed consultant microbiologist to Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester.
