Warnes graduated from the University of Manchester in 1962 and took the MD in 1975. He was elected FRCP in 1980. Warnes is a consultant physician in gastroenterology at MRI, and a honorary lecturer in medicine at the University of Manchester. He is a former president of the North of England Gastroenterology Society. His research interests are in the area of liver disease.
