Ramsden studied chemistry at Owens College, graduating in 1897, and took a medical degree in 1903. He was research fellow in sanitary chemistry at the Public Health Laboratory, Manchester, and in 1905 became lecturer in sanitary chemistry at the Public Health Laboratory.
